Accepting the hair you have
This evening I want to talk about acceptance. Heavy topic for a Wednesday? Don’t worry, I’ll keep it light. It’s something I have been thinking a lot about recently in all areas but today I’m talking hair acceptance.
How many of you have taken an inspiration photo to a hairdresser in the past....only to leave a few hours later looking completely different to how you imagined? Completely not like the photo? Or maybe not quite as you had hoped? Perhaps it was a photo from a magazine? Or a screenshot of someone’s hair you love on Instagram? You wanted to go to your hairdresser’s appointment and recreate it, leaving with a perfect copy of that look.
I’m pretty sure it’s happened to us all at some point. Left feeling slightly disappointed or not quite happy with how our hair looks and feels. Each of us has completely different hair, that behaves, feels and looks different. One person’s tumbling waves might be thick and curly naturally, whereas your hair may be thinner and silkier and therefore the style you loved on someone else may just not work for you. That doesn’t mean you can’t have your hair however you like, but it means we sometimes have to change our expectations and learn to accept the hair we have.
Accept our hair with all its funny strays, its kinks and waves and curls and poker straight bits amongst the wild strands. Accept our hair if it’s thin and finer or super thick and feels untameable. Discover a style that may be inspired by a photo you have seen of someone else, but is completely YOU. That allows you and your hair to shine in the best possible way.
It’s sometimes easier said than done, especially for those of us that are celebrating our natural colour. We get what we’re given. Salt and pepper, pure white, silver or many more. That doesn’t mean we can’t enhance and rock and champion our own uniquely special shade. We receive comments under our photos all the time of people saying that they ‘wish’ their hair was a different colour or like the person in the image we have shared.
Today, I urge you to take a look in the mirror just for a few seconds and find 2 things you LOVE about your own hair, exactly as it is now. It’ll feel good, I promise.
