Letting loose, not letting go
Do you sometimes hear the comment that someone has ‘let themselves go’? It’s a particularly negative phrase that suggests that you no longer care about how you look and have somehow lost yourself along the way. It’s true that ditching the dye is letting go in one sense, as you let go of an idea you had about how your hair should look. But this letting go is something different. We are freeing ourselves, letting loose, revealing our natural colours, accepting and maybe even celebrating who we are.
At White Hot, we always say we are not the hair-dye police. If dyeing your hair makes you feel good when you look in the mirror, then do it. If you don’t feel quite ready to fly the silver flag just yet, that’s fine. If you want to delve in head first, then go for it. It’s been really liberating to see so many women walking around with silvers emerging, as if they’ve been given permission for the first time. If you can’t wait to get back into the colourist’s chair, that’s great too. Let’s just make our own choices.
We all get used to habits, actions and rituals that become ingrained in our daily lives. For me, not having my 4 weekly short hair trim feels like a big change. I have never had longer hair and at the moment, I’m giving it a tiny whirl. I’m letting go of ‘it doesn’t grow’ or ‘it’s not the right type of hair to look good longer’. I’ll see how it goes and if I don’t like how it’s shaping up, I’ll change it.
Of course, this is a much bigger conversation than just about hair. It’s a work in progress, but what I’ve realised is, letting loose is good.
