How has my relationship with my hair changed?

Hair. It’s a funny old thing and although there is definitely more to life than hair, it sure has an impact on our self confidence, style and how we feel about ourselves overall. My relationship with my hair has twisted and turned over the years, seeing me from my curly brunette perm, to a super dark crop, to a myriad of shades of brown, choppy bobs, shorter cuts, blonder periods to finally ditching the dye. From being convinced my hair just ‘didn’t grow’ and keeping it short and textured for ever, to just seeing what happened during lockdown in 2020 and discovering it did in fact, grow. Here I am with a mob (my version of a midi and bob combo), sometimes a longer fringe that parts at the side, giving me more of a ‘bangs’ look (as my daughter says) and sometimes having a full fringe. I like it!

Just because I champion the dye free life and 95% of the time I love my white hair, doesn’t mean I don’t sometimes look in the mirror and think back to all the many colours and styles I have tried. I love my hair longer, but sometimes I just want to chop it all off. Then I wake up the next day and love it again! I don’t use heat on my hair at all, because although I do love a smooth blow dry every once in a while, the brassiness that comes from heated styling just isn’t worth it for me. All compromise! And actually, I do enjoy embracing my natural waves, as every day it looks different.

When it comes to clothes, I know what colours I love with my hair. Blues, pinks, white, pops of vibrancy, but wishy washy shades just don’t make me feel great. I think it’s about understanding what helps you love your dye free hair. It can be easy to miss the change, the buzz from a ‘fresh dye’ appointment, but ultimately, I just want my hair to be healthy and happy, just like the rest of me. Also while it’s tempting to stay with the same hairdresser you have known forever, it can be refreshing to try someone new who sees you from a different angle, pushes you beyond your comfort zone or sees something in your hair that you don’t see yourself.

Just a few thoughts from me today. How you feel about your hair can change day to day or month to month, regardless of the wonderful care it receives (hello White Hot prods!) and in my eyes, as long as you feel mostly positive about it, mostly positive about your decision to ditch the dye and feel mostly happy when you look in the mirror, that sounds pretty good to me.

Anything you need from us, send us a message on Facebook or Instagram or send a note to customercare@whitehothair.co.uk and we’ll get back to you. Keep sending your selfies too, we love to hear from you!
